EARL Brooks is Portland’s man of the year, a successful businessman with a beautiful wife and a daughter. He’s also an addict – to killing. It’s his ultimate turn-on and he’s very good at it.
In the lead role, Kevin Costner battles with an alter ego, always pushing him on to the next “fix” while he stifles his urges at AA meetings.
His secret is in danger of being exposed when a double killing is witnessed by a neighbour.
Cue call to police, sirens and court? No, because our witness would rather blackmail Brooks into taking him on his next killing spree.
That scenario is a little preposterous but the film is enjoyable enough to go with it.
Hot on Brooks’s tail is Demi Moore, a detective going through a nasty divorce and with a previous serial killer back on the streets to worry about.
There are too many elements which are never really fully explored here – including Brooks’s daughter’s own killing tendencies – and we could do with more Demi, but it’s a decent if flawed watch.
