BASED on a true story, Richard Gere is Clifford Irving, an American author living on past glories who is desperate for another hit. After his latest book is rejected, he embarks on an ingenious plan to pull off the century’s biggest literary con trick.
Irving convinces a publisher he has written the exclusive autobiography of reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes.
Hughes might deny it, but he’s so reclusive no-one will believe him, is pretty much the thinking. There are nice side-plot elements involving Richard Nixon and the Watergate scandal but infuriatingly these are never fully developed. The Hoax would have made a great epic with all the avenues properly explored. They aren’t, and it feels a little like the producers bottled it half way through.
