PERIOD drama is my one weakness, as Dorcas might say in Lark Rise to Candleford, so this sequel to Elizabeth I was already preaching to the converted.
Cate Blanchett is excellent as the Virgin Queen whose kingdom is now threatened by the Spanish Armada.
King Philip II would be more than happy to replace her with his cousin, Mary Stuart (Samantha Morton as the arch plotter), currently under guard in Scotland. Clive Owen is Sir Walter Raleigh, who steals the Queen’s heart with his globe-trotting derring-do, but she is only frustrated by her inability to strike up a romance.
He turns his attentions to one of her ladies in waiting instead, but she does not stray from her duty. Historic accuracy is rather sacrificed for dramatic effect, especially with Elizabeth on a white steed on the cliffs of Dover, watching the Armada battle unfold, but it’s a most enjoyable watch
