INSURANCE executive Nick Hume (Kevin Bacon) and his family – wife Helen (Kelly Preston) and teenage sons Brendan (Stuart Lafferty) and Lucas (Jordan Garrett) – are the picture of middle-class, suburban perfection.
On the way home from a hockey game, thugs burst into the petrol station where the family has stopped, killing the cashier and fatally injuring Brendan as part of a gang initiation test.
As they flee, Nick tackles and unmasks one of the killers, whom he subsequently identifies in a police line-up.
When the justice system fails Nick and his family, the normally demure businessman reluctantly takes matters into his own hands, igniting a war with gang leader Billy.
For the first hour, Death Sentence is a thoroughly gripping thriller but just as the film seems to be coasting along it runs out of momentum and credibility.
