THE second – and sadly final – season of Rome did something I didn’t think was possible – it managed to be even better than the first.
This BBC/HBO collaboration was simply one of the best things on TV, combining political intrigue and epic battles, with the occasional orgy thrown in. The DVD gathers together all 10 episodes with sumptuous extras. Caesar is dead and the battle for control of Rome begins, both politically and ultimately on the battlefield, between Brutus, Octavian and Mark Antony.
The action is held together by the friendship of Titus Pollo and Marcus Vorenus, played brilliantly by Ray Stevenson and Kevin McKidd, the legionnaires who find themselves fighting on different sides at one point. The other acting honours go to James Purefoy as Mark Antony, his descent into love and drug addled madness, at the hands of Cleopatra, is a warning to all who would let the heart rule the head. Only the return of the Sopranos has filled the void.
