FEW movies – if they want to make any money, anyway – would wish to choose the onset of Alzheimer’s disease as a topic. But this beautifully acted piece proves not only very watchable but also gives considerable food for thought.
Julie Christie has long been one of my favourite actresses, and her performance here as Fiona is utterly captivating. How she manages to portray a woman slowly succumbing to the loss of her mind with such grace and dignity is almost unfathomable.
She is ably supported by Gordon Pinsent, as husband Grant, whose past history of affairs during his days as a university lecturer is the one thing Fiona never forgets. As Fiona moves into a care home and appears to fall in love with another resident, Grant is left with a stark choice over her future happiness.
Not a popcorn film but one which deals with a sad reality of life with a tender touch.
